4 Ways to Support Adult English Programs for Immigrants in California

To integrate into the United States economy, thousands of immigrants enroll in English language programs in California’s adult school programs, the largest adult education system in the country. While the current fiscal crisis in the state has forced these schools to pare their classes, we can do more to support programs that facilitate immigrant integration.

1. Learn more: A number of recent studies and reports have clearly illustrated the benefits of adult English programs.

2. Volunteer to help teach: Several programs train and place volunteers English teachers in local English programs.

3. Contact your California State Representatives: California’s education is facing drastic cuts as a result of the state’s fiscal crisis.

4. Contact your Congressional Representatives in Washington and ask them to support pending legislation.
